The city seal of Newton, Massachusetts, holds a sketch of a Pilgrim man speaking to a group of Native Americans and, underneath the picture, the word Nonantum. Those Native Americans were the Algonquins with the Chief Waban, and the Puritan in the seal is John Eliot, whom Harvard historian Samuel Eliot Morison called “The Apostle to the Indians.”
Today Evangelical Baptist Church of Newton stands squarely in the tradition of the teachings of John Eliot. We, like Eliot, believe that God is actively offering to all people eternal life and deliverance from the slavery of sin through Jesus Christ.
