Proverbs 25: 6,7

Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence

Or stand in the place of the great,

For it is better to be told, “Come up here,”

Than to be put lower in the presence of a noble.

Advancement and promotion is good, but what is more embarrassing than asserting oneself and then being rebuffed? “Get back in your place!” What is more mortifying than being exposed - especially in the presence of the worthy - as a poser and fraud?

Dear people, just work the fundamentals. Keep your head down. Don’t scramble for notoriety. Don’t manipulate the meeting to stand out. Let other people beat their drum; yours is to be quiet.

Don’t appear important. Far better to be important. Don’t ask your supervisor to lean on you. Just quietly become more skilled, get stronger.

Walk in humility. “For our boast is this: the testimony of our conscience that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom [riddled as it is with posturing and puffery] but by the grace of God.”

Our God knows where we are. He promotes. He raises up and casts down. Isn’t our gospel that of a Man in the depths of Sheol and raised as our Master to the highest place?

Be quiet and wait for God. Eventually he’ll say, “Come up here.”

Bible Reading: Romans 16: 1,2

Wow, what an introduction! Paul used his status to make room for other people, so they could serve more efficiently.
